Parents make beautiful promises to the Lord at their child’s baptism:
You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you are accepting the responsibility of training him (her) in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him (her) up to keep God's commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?
This question is asked and answered in the affirmative by parents at every baptism, but what does it mean?
To keep God's commandments: There are 10 commandments - Central is to honor the Sabbath, come to Mass to be formed by the teaching of Jesus, and receive the Body of Jesus, which is essential for eternal life. Jesus sums it up in that if we love God, we will show that love in honoring that which God asks of us.
Loving God – making God your first love, all other loves will fall properly into place.
